Ghana’s Premier League clubs are set to receive a financial boost of at least GHC1 million ($83,000) each ahead of the 2025/26 season, under a new broadcast agreement unveiled Thursday by the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
GFA President Kurt Okraku announced the development at a media event in Accra, marking the formal launch of a tripartite partnership involving the GFA, local media rights holder Adesa Productions, and the government of Ghana, represented by Chief of Staff Julius Debrah.
"Through this unique partnership with Adesa Productions, each one of our GPL clubs will, before the start of the league season, receive the amount of a million Ghana cedis," Okraku said. "This is not a grant; it is a firm commitment by the Football Association, Adesa Productions, and the government."
The guaranteed payments aim to shore up the financial foundations of the Ghana Premier League (GPL) clubs, many of which have struggled with liquidity in recent seasons. The funds will be disbursed ahead of the new campaign, which kicks off the weekend of September 12.
The deal also ends mounting speculation about a potential return of StarTimes as the league’s broadcast partner. The Chinese media company had been the incumbent rights holder but failed to reach renewal terms with the GFA following the expiration of their contract at the close of the 2023/24 season.
Under the new arrangement, Adesa Productions assumes exclusive broadcasting responsibilities, signaling a strategic pivot by the GFA toward localized media collaboration. The financial structure of the agreement was not fully disclosed, though GFA officials emphasized that the GHC1 million figure represents a baseline payout, with the possibility of further financial benefits tied to performance and viewership metrics.
The 2025/26 season will see reigning champions Bibiani Gold Stars defend their title against 17 other clubs in what is expected to be a closely contested campaign.
