The campaign team of Kennedy Agyapong, a leading contender in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) upcoming presidential primaries, is calling for formal disciplinary proceedings against two high-profile regional party chairmen, citing what it describes as “reckless” and “divisive” remarks.
In a statement issued Sunday, Agyapong’s spokesperson, Kwasi Kwarteng, urged the NPP’s disciplinary organs to sanction Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Wontumi, and Bono Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe, also known as Abronye DC. Both men have come under criticism for comments perceived to undermine the party’s internal electoral process.
Wontumi reportedly claimed that the party’s decision to hold its presidential primaries on Jan. 31, 2026, was designed to benefit a particular aspirant. Abronye was also quoted as stating he would restrict certain individuals from participating in the regional vote compilation process — a role he claimed to control.
While Wontumi later clarified his remarks, framing them as grassroots feedback on party strategy, Agyapong’s team said such statements violate the party’s constitution and erode trust in the electoral process.
“The party distancing itself alone is not enough,” Kwarteng said in an interview with Channel One. “They should be summoned to face disciplinary action. It is a clear act of violation of the party’s constitution and misconduct.”
The NPP leadership has already issued a statement disassociating itself from the comments, but stopped short of taking further punitive action.
The internal tensions come at a critical juncture for the NPP as it prepares to select a successor to President Nana Akufo-Addo ahead of the 2028 general elections. Agyapong, a long-serving Member of Parliament, is one of the party’s top contenders.
Analysts say the handling of the current dispute could test the party’s commitment to transparency and unity in what is expected to be a closely contested primary.
