Ken Agyapong Campaign Accuses NPP of Bias in Favor of Bawumia as ‘Establishment Choice’

The campaign team of Kennedy Agyapong, a leading contender in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer race, has accused party leadership of bias in favor of  former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, calling him the “establishment choice” ahead of the upcoming presidential primaries.

In a sharply worded statement released Thursday, Mr. Agyapong’s spokesperson, Kwasi Kwarteng, criticized the use of the party’s official social media platforms to exclusively stream Dr. Bawumia’s nomination filing event. The move, the campaign argued, undermines the party’s stated commitment to neutrality and internal unity.

“The use of the official party’s social media handles to stream only Dr. Bawumia’s nomination filing is a betrayal of the very unity our national leadership claims to preach,” the statement read.

The Agyapong campaign alleges the incident is part of a broader pattern of favoritism within the party, aimed at bolstering Bawumia’s candidacy at the expense of other contenders. According to the statement, similar practices were observed during past internal contests.

Mr. Kwarteng pointed to what he described as the party’s poor showing in the 2024 general elections under the Vice President’s influence, citing significant declines in voter support across multiple regions. “Under his watch, we recorded the worst results in our party’s history: a 31% drop in national votes, a 16% decline in northern votes, a 33% fall in southern votes, and virtually no support from the Zongo communities,” the statement said.

Despite those setbacks, party leadership continues to rally behind Dr. Bawumia, the campaign argues, rather than focusing on reconciliation and party rebuilding. “At such a time, the priority should be rebuilding a stronger, united party to restore hope and confidence,” Kwarteng said. “Instead, leadership continues to impose the very candidate under whom we suffered these losses.”

The campaign warned that continued favoritism could fracture internal cohesion and force other aspirants to act independently. “The grassroots will not be forced into silence while the future of the party is mortgaged for one individual,” the statement concluded.
