The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has led a high-level security delegation to the Savannah Region in the wake of violent communal clashes that left five people dead and several others injured.
The visit comes after a deadly land dispute erupted on Sunday morning in Gbiniyiri, a farming community in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District. Local authorities say the violence broke out following a disagreement over land ownership.
According to the Ghana Police Service, the IGP and his team from the National Police Headquarters will engage with traditional authorities, opinion leaders, and community stakeholders in Sawla, Gbiniyiri, Giniri, and other affected areas in a bid to restore calm.
Security has since been intensified, with reinforcement teams deployed in collaboration with the Ghana Armed Forces and other security agencies.
In a statement, the police appealed for cooperation from all parties: “We urge all parties to remain calm and work with the security teams to ensure lasting peace in the area.”
At least six people were injured in the clashes, with three reported to be in critical condition.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
