Guinea-Bissau’s President Umaro Sissoco Embaló has appointed a new prime minister, just three months before the country heads to presidential and legislative elections.
Braima Camara, a former coordinator of the opposition Madem G15 party, was named to the post through a presidential decree on Thursday. He becomes the third person to hold the position since Embaló assumed office in 2020, replacing Rui Duarte de Barros.
The appointment comes amid political tensions, as opposition groups argue that Embaló’s mandate expired months ago. In March, the president announced he would seek a second term in the November polls—reversing an earlier pledge to step down.
Both the presidential and legislative elections are scheduled for November 23.
