The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has ordered the immediate closure of the Royal Nursing College in Kumasi after it was discovered that the school has been operating with an expired accreditation for nearly four years.
In a letter dated September 12, 2025, and signed by GTEC’s Director-General, Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, the Commission revealed that the college’s accreditation expired on December 16, 2021. It stressed that the institution cannot continue functioning as a tertiary school until it secures fresh accreditation from both GTEC and the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
The directive followed an August 28, 2025, meeting involving officials of the college, GTEC, the NMC, and the Ministry of Health’s Health Training Institutions Unit.
Per the directive, the college has been instructed to:
• Submit staff documentation, including appointment letters, CVs, and proof of remuneration for management and teaching staff.
• Cease operations immediately and work with its mentor institution, the University of Cape Coast (UCC), to develop a teach-out plan for students admitted between 2021 and 2024.
• Suspend admissions and halt the intake of new students until accreditation is restored.
The Commission also directed the school to address regulatory deficiencies and provide verifiable evidence of corrective measures. A joint verification exercise by GTEC and the NMC will be carried out before any consideration of re-accreditation.
GTEC underscored that the matter must be treated with “the utmost urgency and seriousness it deserves.”
