GRNMA Suspends Planned Strike Following Successful Talks with Gov't

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has suspended its planned industrial action following what it described as productive discussions with key government representatives.

In a statement on Tuesday, the association said the decision was reached after a high-level meeting with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) and the Ministry of Finance on Monday, 15 July.

GRNMA President, Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, said the government had made commitments that satisfied the association’s immediate concerns, particularly on the issue of fuel allowances.

“The Ministry of Finance has confirmed that the allowances will be factored into the upcoming mid-year budget review,” she said. The allowances, however, will be based on existing government-approved rates, officials clarified.

The association had previously threatened to embark on a nationwide strike over unresolved issues surrounding conditions of service, including an 8% basic salary adjustment. While the government did not immediately grant the salary increase, it acknowledged the urgency of the request and asked for more time to implement any changes.

Ms Ofori-Ampofo added that other outstanding matters outlined in the association’s collective agreement would also be reviewed during the mid-year budget process, a move she described as encouraging.

“With these assurances, we are optimistic about continued dialogue and progress,” she said, adding that the association currently has no intention of pursuing industrial action.

The suspension of the strike comes as a relief to the health sector, which faced potential disruptions had the planned action gone ahead.
