Ghana’s Black Queens delivered a commanding second-half performance to secure a 4–1 victory over Tanzania on Monday, earning a place in the quarter-finals of the 2024 TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
The win, marked by tactical discipline and clinical finishing, reinforced Ghana’s position as a title contender in the continent’s premier women’s football competition.
Forward Princella Adubea opened the scoring for Ghana in the 12th minute, calmly converting from the center of the box following a well-orchestrated attacking sequence. The early goal reflected Ghana’s aggressive start, but Tanzania responded with composure.
Just before halftime, Tanzania’s Stumai Athumani leveled the match, capitalizing on a headed assist from Enekia Lunyamila. The teams entered the break tied 1–1, with Tanzania displaying resilience in the face of Ghana’s early dominance.
The second half, however, tilted decisively in Ghana’s favor.
In the 63rd minute, Alice Kusi restored Ghana’s lead, converting a penalty after Princess Marfo was brought down in the box. Kusi’s finish was clinical, sending the Tanzanian goalkeeper the wrong way.
From there, the momentum shifted irreversibly. Ghana’s midfield began to dictate tempo, and their attacking depth wore down the Tanzanian backline. In the 87th minute, Evelyn Badu extended the lead to 3–1, finishing from close range after a set-piece delivery caused confusion in the box.
In stoppage time, substitute Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah completed the rout, capping a swift counterattack with a composed finish to make it 4–1.
Ghana’s blend of experience and attacking precision proved decisive, as they outclassed a spirited Tanzanian side in the closing stages. The result secures the Black Queens a spot in the knockout rounds and positions them as a team to watch in the tournament’s latter stages.
The quarter-final berth marks a significant step for Ghana, who are seeking their first WAFCON title after multiple near-misses in previous editions.
