Ghanaian Players Abroad: Issahaku ends 16-month goal drought, Seidu returns from long injury layoff

Ghanaian footballers were in action across Europe and beyond over the weekend, with several producing eye-catching performances for their clubs between Friday, August 22, and Sunday, August 24.

England

Antoine Semenyo maintained his bright start to the season, setting up the winner in Bournemouth’s 1-0 victory over Wolves on Saturday. He now has two goals and one assist in just two Premier League matches.

Mohammed Kudus also impressed for Tottenham Hotspur, completing a game-high three dribbles as Spurs stunned Manchester City 2-0 at the Etihad.

In the Championship, Abdul Fatawu Issahaku ended a 16-month goal drought with a brilliant strike that sealed Leicester City’s 1-0 win over Charlton. His last goal came in April 2024 against Southampton, before injuries forced him to miss 27 league games. Jordan Ayew also featured in that fixture.

Elsewhere, Brandon Thomas-Asante delivered a standout display for Coventry City, scoring once and providing two assists in their 7-1 demolition of QPR. He now has two goals and two assists in three league outings.

Spain

Kwesi Sibo played the full 90 minutes in Real Oviedo’s 3-0 defeat to Real Madrid, while Thomas Partey came off the bench as Villarreal thrashed Girona 5-0.

France

Ibrahim Osman continued his fine form with an assist in AJ Auxerre’s 3-1 defeat to Nice. Gideon Mensah and Elisha Owusu also featured, while Kojo Oppong and Salis Samed turned out for the winners.

Alidu Seidu marked his long-awaited return from an ACL injury, coming off the bench in Stade Rennais’s 4-0 defeat to Lorient. The defender had been sidelined since November 2024 after sustaining the injury against Lille.

Germany

Ilyas Ansah was the hero for Union Berlin, netting twice in their 2-1 win over Stuttgart on the opening weekend of the Bundesliga.

Ransford Königsdörffer made his Bundesliga debut in Hamburger SV’s goalless draw with Borussia Mönchengladbach, while Ragnar Ache came off the bench for his Köln debut in a 1-0 win over Mainz.

Italy

Kamaldeen Sulemana made his debut for Atalanta, coming on in the 70th minute of their 1-1 draw with Pisa. Fellow Ghanaian Ibrahim Sulemana was left out amid uncertainty over his future.

Austria & Slovenia

In Austria, Edmund Baidoo came off the bench to score in RB Salzburg’s 3-0 win over LASK Linz, taking his tally to one goal and one assist in three league games.

Benjamin Tetteh was in sparkling form in Slovenia, scoring twice and providing an assist in Maribor’s 5-1 win over Radomlje. He now has five goals in six league matches.

Elsewhere in Europe & Asia

Jerry Afriyie made his debut for La Louvière in a goalless draw against Belgian champions USG, who were without Mohammed Fuseini.

In Sweden, Emmanuel Yeboah netted a penalty as Halmstad edged Elfsborg 2-1.

Aziz Yakubu struck twice for Qingdao in a 3-2 defeat to Shandong in the Chinese Super League, while Frank Acheampong also scored in Henan’s 4-0 win over Dalian Yingbo.

In Serbia, Edmund Addo registered an assist in OFK Beograd’s 1-1 draw with Mladost.
