The Public Accounts Committee (PAC), working in concert with the Auditor-General, has recovered more than GH¢12.9 billion (approximately $1 billion) in misappropriated public funds, according to committee officials.
The recovery comes amid ongoing parliamentary scrutiny of financial infractions outlined in the 2024 Auditor-General’s Report, which detailed widespread irregularities across ministries, departments, and government agencies.
PAC Chairperson Abena Osei-Asare, speaking Wednesday, credited the collaborative effort between the committee and the Auditor-General’s office for the progress. “What we are doing is yielding positive results,” she said. “With the support of the Auditor-General, we have been able to retrieve GH¢12.9 billion. A full report will be made available to the public in due course.”
The PAC has been holding a series of hearings in recent weeks to probe the misuse of state resources and enforce accountability measures. The committee is scheduled to resume sittings on October 27.
The announcement underscores growing pressure on Ghanaian authorities to clamp down on public sector corruption as the country contends with fiscal constraints and ongoing efforts to stabilize its economy.
