Frequent Power Outages in Yendi Prompt NEDCO Engagement

Persistent power outages and low voltage in Yendi and other parts of the Eastern Corridor of the Northern Region have become a growing concern for residents, many of whom report that their electrical appliances have been damaged as a result.

The situation has sparked widespread agitation, leading the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCO) to hold an engagement session with the community. The meeting brought together NEDCO officials, local authorities, and residents of Yendi to discuss long-term solutions to the recurring power challenges.

Speaking at the forum, NEDCO’s Managing Director, Mr. Maxwell Koroka, acknowledged the difficulties and apologised for the inconvenience caused. He assured residents that technical interventions were already underway to stabilise the power supply.

“We have had challenges on the line because it is a long stretch from Yendi all the way to Kete Krachi and beyond. As a result, those at the far ends of the line receive very low voltages, regardless of how high the voltage is at the departure point,” he explained.

Mr. Koroka highlighted recent measures taken with the support of the Ministry of Energy to ease the problem, including the construction of a parallel feeder line from Yendi to Bimbilla, which now supplies power to Bimbilla.

He further appealed for patience from residents, assuring them of continued efforts to improve supply reliability.

“Management is exploring options that will enable us to migrate Salaga, which requires about 3 megawatts, onto the new feeder at Bimbilla. This will provide Salaga with a more reliable and efficient supply while reducing the load on the existing line, thereby improving quality and stability for consumers,” he added.

The meeting ended with renewed assurances from NEDCO that concrete steps were being taken to address the persistent outages and restore public confidence in the electricity supply system.
