Tamale Central By-Election: NDC’s Prof. Alidu Mahama Seidu Files Nomination

The newly elected National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for Tamale Central, Professor Alidu Mahama Seidu, has formally filed his nomination with the Electoral Commission (EC) to contest the constituency’s by-election scheduled for Tuesday, September 30, 2025.

Prof. Seidu, a political science lecturer, emerged as the NDC’s candidate after securing a landslide victory in the party’s internal contest held on Saturday, September 6, 2025 at the Alhaji Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium. He polled 840 votes out of a total of 1,511 cast, defeating 11 other aspirants. His closest contender, Abdul Hannan Gundado, garnered 536 votes.

Meanwhile, the Tamale Metro EC Director, Anaba Samson, disclosed that at least four other contenders have picked nomination forms. They include representatives of the All People’s Congress (APC), the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), the People’s National Convention (PNC), as well as an independent candidate. However, as of Tuesday, September 9, none of them had submitted their forms. The deadline for submission is Wednesday, September 10, 2025.

The Tamale Central seat became vacant following the tragic death of Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, the sitting NDC Member of Parliament, who was killed in a helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

The upcoming by-election is expected to be keenly contested, with the NDC seeking to retain the seat it has long held, while rival parties look to make inroads in one of the party’s strongholds in the Northern Region.
