A fire broke out early Monday at the Accra Tourist Information Centre, a prominent cultural landmark situated across from Afrikiki in Ghana’s capital. The incident occurred around 1:00 a.m,according to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), which is continuing efforts to fully contain the blaze.
Preliminary reports suggest the flames may have originated near the kitchen of Rockz Waakye, a well-known food vendor operating within the facility. However, fire officials said the exact cause remains under investigation. No injuries or fatalities have been reported.
The Accra Tourist Information Centre serves as a key node for travelers and event organizers, making the fire a potential setback for the city's tourism activity. Authorities are assessing the extent of the damage.
In a separate incident late Sunday, a fire at Madina Ritz Junction destroyed more than 50 makeshift wooden structures and metal containers, displacing numerous residents. That blaze reportedly began at a local washing bay within the densely populated slum area. Firefighters from the Madina Fire Station arrived promptly, containing the fire before it could spread to neighboring areas.
Both incidents come amid the peak of Ghana’s dry season, a period marked by elevated fire risks. Investigations are underway to determine the origins and possible safety lapses in each case.
