A former employee of the Tema Development Company (TDC) Limited is under scrutiny for allegedly selling public land earmarked for a sanitation facility to his wife for just GHS2,000 (approximately $170).
The TDC has since recovered the property, which is located in Tema Community 5 behind Tema Secondary School, and terminated the official’s contract.
TDC Managing Director Courage Makafui Nunekpeku, speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Thursday, named the accused as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Tema Central Constituency Secretary. The individual previously served as a protocol officer to a former TDC Managing Director.
“The land was sold to the wife of the NPP secretary for GHS2,000. The documentation is available,” said Mr. Nunekpeku. “Following an internal investigation, I intervened, engaged the woman, and terminated the contract. The land has now been reclaimed for its intended public use.”
The plot had been designated for the construction of a public toilet, in line with TDC’s broader mandate to develop infrastructure and housing within the Tema municipality.
Mr. Nunekpeku emphasized that TDC is committed to addressing irregular land transactions and restoring state-owned property to public use. “I am not grabbing any land,” he said. “I’m simply doing what’s right for Ghanaians.”
Separately, Mr. Nunekpeku addressed ongoing tensions between the Peaceful Settlers’ Association and the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly.
The group has accused the Assembly of attempting to seize land under a disputed legal status, despite a court injunction. He noted that TDC is engaging stakeholders to pursue a peaceful resolution to the matter.
