Deputy Minister-designate for Transport, Dorcas Affo-Toffey, has proposed the construction of a railway line linking Jomoro in the Western Region to Tema in the Greater Accra Region. The project, she believes, could significantly enhance national trade logistics and support Ghana’s broader infrastructure development goals.
Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Friday, July 25, Madam Affo-Toffey expressed her firm commitment to revitalising the country’s railway sector. She emphasised the need to attract private sector participation in order to improve efficiency and drive long-term sustainability.
“If given the nod, I intend to work closely with my sector minister, Hon. Joseph Bukari Nikpe, to open up the railway sector to private investment,” she said. “We must find innovative ways to revamp the industry and make it viable, both economically and operationally.”
Responding to a question from the committee on whether she supports the idea of a railway connection between Jomoro and Tema, the nominee responded affirmatively.
“Yes, Mr. Chairman, I will support it because it will help. Absolutely, I will,” she said.
Madam Affo-Toffey further assured the committee of her readiness to contribute meaningfully to the growth of Ghana’s transport and railway infrastructure if confirmed for the role.
Her proposal comes at a time when government efforts to expand the country’s rail network are gaining momentum, with ongoing projects aimed at improving connectivity between key economic zones.
