Defense Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, on Monday urged calm and restraint in the northern town of Bawku, where renewed violence erupted over the weekend, deepening security concerns in the longstanding conflict zone.
In a statement posted on his official Facebook page, Dr. Boamah described the July 13 attacks as “disturbing,” and said comprehensive investigations have been launched to determine the cause and perpetrators of the incident. He emphasized the government’s commitment to restoring stability and assured the public that appropriate measures are being taken to contain the situation.
“We are, once again, urging restraint and calm in Bawku regarding the latest developments as of yesterday,” Dr. Boamah said, referring to Sunday’s outbreak of violence that has heightened tensions in the area.
The minister’s appeal comes amid growing anxiety among residents, who have reported heightened insecurity following the most recent clashes. Bawku has been a flashpoint of intercommunal conflict in recent years, with periodic outbreaks of violence complicating the government’s efforts to restore peace.
“I have directed thorough investigations into the recent matter and promised to take swift action based on recommendations,” Dr. Boamah said, underscoring the government's readiness to act on findings from the ongoing probe.
Concluding his statement, the minister issued a renewed appeal to all parties involved in the conflict to avoid further escalation. “Once again, let us ensure restraint!” he wrote.
Sunday's violence threatens to undermine recent gains and poses a fresh challenge to national authorities working to stabilize the region.
