An aide to politician Dr. Bryan Acheampong dismissed a new political poll as a “psychological operation” intended to influence public perception, following the release of survey data showing Acheampong trailing significantly behind Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the race to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 general elections.
The poll, conducted by research firm Global InfoAnalytics between August 12 and 20, surveyed 2,656 NPP delegates nationwide. It showed Bawumia commanding 52% support, followed by Kennedy Agyapong at 17%, with Acheampong capturing just 3%.
Pius Enam Hadzide, spokesperson for the Acheampong campaign, questioned the legitimacy of such data during an interview with Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Friday.
“I don’t know about it,” Mr. Hadzide said. “But many of these researches are a psychological operation — sometimes sponsored by politicians who seek to deceive unsuspecting audiences and to create a misleading impression.”
Still, the campaign maintains it views all research, including unfavorable polling, as valuable insight. “Our attitude at the Bryan Acheampong campaign is that all research, wherever they are coming from, we take it as feedback,” Hadzide added. “And if there are any gaps, we work on those.”
Despite the low showing, Acheampong’s team remains confident, citing his relative newcomer status and late entry into the contest.
“We are very confident that Dr. Bryan Acheampong is not only the fastest-growing contender in this race — published research has also confirmed this,” Hadzide said, though he did not specify which research he was referencing.
Acheampong, a former Cabinet Minister and Member of Parliament, is making his first bid for the NPP flagbearer position in what is shaping up to be a competitive race ahead of the 2028 election.
