Bodies of Omane Boamah, Murtala Muhammed, and Six Others Recovered After Helicopter Crash

Authorities have recovered the bodies of eight individuals, including two cabinet ministers and senior military officers, following the crash of a Ghana Armed Forces helicopter in a remote part of the Ashanti Region.

The victims include Defense Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed. The crash occurred Wednesday, August 6, as the aircraft lost contact with air traffic control while en route to the mining town of Obuasi.

The Z-9 military helicopter went down in dense forest in the Adansi Akrofuom District, prompting a coordinated search effort by national security and emergency response teams. All eight people on board were confirmed dead.

Among the deceased were:

Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator

Samuel Aboagye, former parliamentary candidate

Samuel Sarpong, National First Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)

Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Ghana Armed Forces

Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, Ghana Armed Forces

Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, Ghana Armed Forces

The presidency confirmed the fatalities shortly after the wreckage was located. The government has directed that all national flags be flown at half-mast to honor the victims.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by aviation and military authorities.
