Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Apostle Dr. Kwadwo Safo Kantanka, founder and leader of the Kristo Asafo Mission.
The Safo family and the Kristo Asafo Church confirmed Apostle Safo’s death on Thursday, September 11, 2025.
In a tribute shared on his official Facebook page, Dr. Bawumia described the late Apostle as a pioneering innovator, spiritual leader, and true patriot whose legacy will continue to inspire generations of Ghanaians.
“Apostle Safo served Ghana beyond the capacity of a religious leader,” Dr. Bawumia wrote. “He pioneered indigenous innovations and inspired an industrial spirit among Ghanaians. He was also committed to improving the lives of the less privileged, as seen in his many philanthropic endeavours.”
Widely celebrated as the “Star of Africa”, Apostle Safo earned reverence not only for his spiritual leadership but also for his groundbreaking achievements in local engineering and manufacturing. Through the Kantanka Group of Companies, he championed homegrown technological advancement, producing locally made vehicles and machinery at a time when such ambitions seemed out of reach.
Reflecting on his personal encounters with the late Apostle, Dr. Bawumia recalled the warmth and encouragement he consistently received:
“Any time I called on him, I departed his presence with lasting words of encouragement and wisdom. As a religious leader, his open arms always received me.”
On behalf of his family, Dr. Bawumia extended his condolences to the Safo family, the Kristo Asafo Mission, and all who are mourning what he described as an “irreparable loss.” He further urged Ghanaians to honour Apostle Safo’s memory by embracing local innovation and community service.
“May his legacy continue to endure and inspire future generations to believe in our domestic solutions, serve their communities, and put Ghana first,” he added.
