Armed assailants intercepted a passenger bus en route to Kumasi in the early hours of Friday, robbing approximately 20 individuals at gunpoint in a brazen highway attack on a poorly maintained stretch of road in Ghana’s Ashanti Region.
According to eyewitness accounts, the attack occurred around 1:00 a.m. on September 12, between the towns of Tweapease and Mfensi, near the Moments of Glory Prayer Army (MOGPA) along the Sunyani-Kumasi highway. The vehicle, a Sprinter bus with registration number GG 4181-16, was traveling toward Kumasi when it was forced to stop by five armed men who had blocked the roadway.
The assailants reportedly ordered passengers to hand over their valuables, including cash, mobile phones, and personal belongings. No injuries or fatalities were reported, but passengers were said to be severely shaken by the ordeal.
One of the victims, Effah Samuel, confirmed the incident in an interview with Citi News.
Residents and commuters have frequently expressed concern about the deteriorating condition of the Sunyani-Kumasi road, which they say has made the area increasingly vulnerable to armed robbery. Calls for improved road infrastructure and enhanced security patrols have intensified in recent months.
Local authorities have yet to issue a formal statement regarding the incident
