The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced Tuesday, September 2, 2025, as the date for a by-election in the Akwatia Constituency of the Eastern Region. This follows the unfortunate passing of the area’s Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi.
In a statement released on Wednesday, July 30, the EC explained that the parliamentary seat has been officially declared vacant in accordance with Article 112(5) of the 1992 Constitution, which mandates the conduct of a by-election when a seat becomes vacant due to death, resignation, or other causes.
“The Commission will receive nominations from prospective candidates for the election of a Member of Parliament for the said constituency,” the statement read.
Nomination Process and Requirements
Nomination forms for interested candidates will be available for download from the EC’s official website (www.ec.gov.gh) starting Tuesday, July 30, through to Wednesday, August 13, 2025.
Completed nomination forms must be submitted in person or through a designated proposer or seconder — to the EC’s Denkyembour District Office from August 11 to August 13, between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., and 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day.
To qualify, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Nomination forms must be endorsed by two registered voters from the constituency — a proposer and a seconder.
- The forms must also be supported by 18 additional registered voters.
- Candidates must submit two recent passport-sized photographs, showing a full face and ears, taken against a red background.
Filing Fees
The filing fee for candidates is set at GH¢10,000. However, the EC has provided a concession for female candidates and persons with disabilities (PWDs), who will pay a reduced fee of GH¢7,500.
The Akwatia by-election is expected to attract strong attention from political parties and independent aspirants, as it presents a crucial opportunity to reshape the balance in Parliament following the loss of MP Ernest Kumi.
Further updates and detailed timelines for the election process are expected to be published by the Electoral Commission in the coming days.
