Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has attributed the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) loss in the 2024 general elections to an extraordinary convergence of crises—rather than a breakdown in governance.
Speaking at the NPP’s National Delegates Conference held on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, the Effutu MP urged party members to remain focused and view the electoral outcome within its broader context.
“Yes, we lost the 2024 elections—and in a significant way,” Afenyo-Markin acknowledged. “But let’s be clear: this was not a loss rooted in poor governance. It was the result of a perfect storm—unprecedented challenges that no administration in Ghana’s Fourth Republic has ever confronted.”
He pointed to a combination of local and global disruptions that, in his view, complicated governance and shaped public sentiment against the ruling party during its second term.
“From the banking sector crisis, which threatened to upend our entire financial system—and required billions to stabilize—to the COVID-19 pandemic that halted economies worldwide,” he said.
He added: “Then came the Russia-Ukraine war, which sparked the most severe cost-of-living crisis in a generation. All this, while we governed with a hung parliament and an opposition Speaker.”
Despite these challenges, Afenyo-Markin praised the fortitude of the Akufo-Addo administration, asserting that its leadership ensured national stability during turbulent times.
“With Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at the helm, we stood firm. We held the line through adversity,” he declared.
He concluded by calling on party faithful to reflect, regroup, and focus on rebuilding a stronger front ahead of future elections.
“The path forward is clear,” he said. “We must learn from the past, unite as a party, and prepare for a triumphant return.”
