The Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, has been granted bail in the sum of GH¢50,000 with one surety, without justification.
His lead counsel, Daniel Mantey Addo, confirmed the court’s decision, describing it as a relief for both the legal team and his family given Abronye’s deteriorating health condition. Efforts are underway to meet the bail requirements and secure his release.
Abronye DC was arrested on September 8, 2025, on charges of offensive conduct conducive to a breach of the peace. Police said the arrest stemmed from public comments in which he allegedly made inflammatory allegations against the Inspector General of Police and the ruling party.
In the days before his arrest, Abronye applied for political asylum in eight countries—including Côte d’Ivoire, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Canada, Spain, and Germany—citing political persecution, threats to his life, and alleged abuse of state security powers.
The case has sparked nationwide debate over the limits of free speech, political accountability, and the protection of opposition voices in Ghana’s democracy.
