Tensions flared at the Ghana–Burkina Faso border town of Hamile in the Upper West Region after irate youth clashed with officers of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS).
The disturbances, which began late Friday night and continued into the early hours of Saturday, saw the youth burn car tyres, vandalize the Immigration Service office, and set ablaze a vehicle belonging to the Service.
According to reports, the unrest was triggered by allegations that an immigration officer had facilitated the entry of armed men from Burkina Faso into Ghana. The officer was also accused of unlawfully arresting a Burkinabe woman — currently domiciled in Ivory Coast due to unrest in her home country — and attempting to repatriate her.
Eyewitnesses say the woman was bundled into one of two vehicles used by immigration officers while on her way to Nandom to visit a relative.
Regional correspondent Rafiq Salam reported that security in Hamile has since been reinforced, though tensions remain high.
