Ghana’s Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has called on West African leaders to strengthen regional efforts in the fight against money laundering, terrorism financing, and weapons proliferation.
Addressing the 2nd Extraordinary Meeting of the Intergovernmental Action Group Against Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA) in Accra, Professor Opoku-Agyemang praised member states for their commitment to adopting international standards in financial crime prevention.
Speaking on Friday, July 18,she urged regional leaders to build a security framework that is not only robust and inclusive but also capable of responding to emerging threats.
“Your work, often behind the scenes, is of great importance to regional security and sustainable development,” the Vice President said. “This is an opportunity to reflect and reimagine how our regional institutions adapt to evolving contexts and expand cooperation.”
She also emphasised the importance of including all ECOWAS member states in the conversation, including countries currently in political transition.
“Our responsibility is to ensure that our architecture for combating money laundering and the financing of terrorism and weapons remains forward-looking and capable of addressing threats across West Africa,” she added.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang concluded with a call for greater unity and collaboration among member states.
“Let this meeting serve not only as a forum for policy, but also as a platform for a partnership that will lead to a more united and resilient West Africa,” she said.
