The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture has announced plans to temporarily relocate the offices of the National Film Authority (NFA) following a devastating fire that broke out at the Accra Tourist Information Centre in the early hours of Monday.
The fire, which reportedly ignited around 12:30 a.m., destroyed multiple offices and properties, including the International Affairs Department, the Ghana Tourism Authority’s Call Center, the Tour Operators Association of Ghana, and the NFA.
Speaking to journalists on site, Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, described the damage as "extensive" but confirmed there were no casualties.
“My heart was broken when I visited the site this morning. We sometimes hold ministry meetings there. It’s devastating to see it no longer habitable,” she said.
Among the affected was musician and entrepreneur Reggie Rockstone, whose popular eatery Rockz Waakye was housed within the facility. The Minister said she has spoken with Rockstone and other displaced tenants and assured them of government support.
In the meantime, plans are underway to relocate the NFA to a different government agency to ensure that operations continue without disruption.
“I’m making arrangements to temporarily house the National Film Authority elsewhere while we assess the damage and decide on long-term recovery measures,” Gomashie noted.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded swiftly to the incident. While the full cause of the blaze is yet to be established, videos posted on social media showed thick smoke billowing from the centre, with visible alarm among onlookers.
The Minister also used the occasion to urge property owners and businesses to obtain fire safety certification and insurance coverage, stressing the importance of proactive protection against future risks.
A comprehensive investigation and report from the GNFS is expected in the coming days.
