Tight Security in Akwatia as NDC Holds Parliamentary Primary Ahead of By-Election

Security has been tightened at the GCD Walker Park in Akwatia today as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) conducts its parliamentary primary to select a candidate for the upcoming September 2 by-election in the Akwatia constituency, located in Ghana’s Eastern Region.

A strong police presence has been deployed across the voting venue and surrounding areas to maintain order as party delegates cast their ballots to choose among three contenders vying to represent the NDC in what is expected to be a fiercely contested by-election.

The aspirants include:

  • Henry Boakye Yiadom, a former Member of Parliament
  • Erasmus Ali Korney, former Presiding Member of the Akwatia Municipal Assembly
  • Bernard Bediako Baidoo, a grassroots party member

Orderly Yet Tense Atmosphere

The atmosphere remains tense but peaceful, with party supporters gathering in significant numbers. Police officers have been seen patrolling both inside and outside the park, with additional personnel manning strategic points to ensure a smooth, secure, and transparent voting process.

Party Confident Ahead of By-Election

Speaking to the media at the venue, Dr. Mark-Oliver Kevor, Eastern Regional Chairman of the NDC, expressed strong confidence in the party’s preparedness and unity going into the by-election.

“The NDC is fully prepared and united behind this by-election. We believe Akwatia is ready for change, and our candidate, once elected today, will carry the constituency to victory on 2nd September,” he stated.

Context of the By-Election

The by-election was triggered by the sudden death of the incumbent MP, Ernest Kumi, a youthful representative of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), whose passing sent shockwaves through the constituency.

Before his death, the NDC had been challenging his election victory in court, citing alleged irregularities in the December 2024 general election. His demise has not only paused those proceedings but has also heightened political activity in the area.

With the seat now officially declared vacant, both the NDC and NPP are gearing up for a high-stakes political battle in Akwatia a constituency seen as a swing seat with deep political significance.
