The long-awaited Tema–Mpakadan railway line will officially begin full operations on October 1, 2025, Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe has announced.
The minister made the disclosure on Wednesday, September 17, during the Government Accountability Series in Accra, confirming that all technical assessments and test runs on the line have been successfully completed.
“We have done a test run on the Tema–Mpakadan rail line and it ended yesterday [Tuesday],” Mr. Nikpe stated. “So by October 1, God willing, we will start the first operations from Tema to Mpakadan. We have finished with the test runs, and everything is set for us to start operations.”
He added that the necessary rolling stock is ready for service: “The two coaches have been fixed, and that is why we were able to carry out the test runs.”
The Tema–Mpakadan rail line forms part of the Eastern Railway Corridor project, designed to strengthen connectivity between the Greater Accra and Eastern Regions. Officials say the project is expected to improve passenger travel, facilitate trade, and enhance economic activity along the corridor.
