Six Dead, Four Rescued After Illegal Mining Pit Collapse Ashanti Region

At least six people have died and four others have been rescued following the collapse of an illegal mining pit in the Ashanti Region.

The incident occurred on Wednesday night at Kasotie, in the Atwima Mponua District, trapping several miners underground.

Rescue operations, led by the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) alongside emergency services and local volunteers, are still under way, with fears that more people may remain trapped beneath the rubble.

So far, six bodies have been retrieved from the collapsed pit, while four individuals were pulled out alive and taken to hospital for treatment. The deceased have been transported to a local morgue.

Efforts to reach others have been hampered by water seeping into the site, complicating the rescue mission.

Samuel Ayine, the Assembly Member for the Kasotie Electoral Area, confirmed the details of the incident and said teams were continuing to work against challenging conditions.

Illegal mining, known locally as "galamsey", remains a persistent issue in Ghana, posing serious safety and environmental risks despite government crackdowns.
