Dancehall artist Shatta Wale has been granted bail of GH₵10 million (£620,000; $830,000) by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) amid an ongoing investigation into alleged tax issues.
The musician, whose real name is Charles Nii Armah Mensah, was detained on Wednesday as part of EOCO’s inquiry into the tax compliance of his luxury Lamborghini vehicle and aspects of his business dealings.
His media manager, Samuel Atuobi Baah — known publicly as Sammy Flex — confirmed in a video statement that Shatta Wale voluntarily reported to EOCO’s offices in Accra on Wednesday afternoon, accompanied by his lawyer Cephas Biyuo.
Mr Baah said the artist’s legal and management teams were working to meet the bail conditions, which include two sureties.
“Before proceeding with the case, EOCO set a bail of GH₵10 million,” he said. “I assure you, the dancehall king’s team is working tirelessly to meet the requirements.”
He also dismissed reports linking the case to unrelated issues, clarifying that the investigation concerns “taxes on the Lamborghini and business operations.”
EOCO has not publicly commented on the matter.
Shatta Wale, known for his controversial persona and chart-topping hits, has previously been at the centre of public scrutiny but maintains a strong fan base across the country.
