Minister for Communications and Digital Technology, Samuel Nartey George, has called on global social media platform TikTok to provide equitable compensation for Ghanaian content creators contributing to the platform's growth and engagement.
Speaking during the Government Accountability Series on Friday, August 1, the Minister revealed that the appeal followed a recent engagement with TikTok executives, aimed at strengthening Ghana’s participation in the global digital economy.
“During the meeting, I urged TikTok to ensure fair compensation to Ghanaian content creators,” Mr. George stated.
“I also proposed the establishment of a local content moderation and governance team that reflects Ghana’s cultural values, protects user rights, and aligns with national regulatory expectations.”
The Minister emphasized that local creators play a significant role in driving engagement and building TikTok’s presence in Ghana, and must be fairly rewarded for their work.
In addition to advocating for better monetization structures, Mr. George announced that the Ministry is collaborating with TikTok to roll out a capacity-building initiative aimed at helping local creators improve their digital skills and earnings potential.
“I’m looking forward to the TikTok partnership with the Ministry to provide training for content creators on how best to monetise the platform. This initiative is expected to launch in Q4 of 2025,” he added.
The move forms part of the government’s broader strategy to promote digital inclusion, support the creative economy, and ensure that global platforms operating in Ghana contribute meaningfully to local development.
