Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Sam George, on Thursday ordered an immediate suspension of a regulatory crackdown targeting unlicensed motorbike delivery riders, following growing concerns over lack of stakeholder engagement and public awareness.
In a post on the social media platform X, Mr. George acknowledged that the enforcement operation—carried out jointly by the Postal and Courier Services Regulatory Commission (PCSRC) and the Ghana Police—was in line with existing laws governing the use of motorcycles for courier services. However, he called for a pause, citing the need for broader consultation and education before resuming any regulatory actions.
“We must enforce the law with a humane face to it,” Mr. George wrote, emphasizing that while regulation is necessary, implementation must be tempered by public understanding and industry input.
The minister said he plans to convene meetings with key stakeholders in the coming days to develop a comprehensive roadmap for enforcement.
The suspended exercise had stirred concern among delivery service operators and riders, many of whom operate informally in Ghana's fast-growing gig economy.
