Ridge Nurse Sues Ralph Williams for GHS7m Over Assault, Defamation

A nurse at Ridge Hospital in Accra has filed a GHS7 million civil lawsuit against social media personality Ralph Saint Williams—known online as “Ralph De Fellow Ghanaian”—alleging physical assault and defamation following a chaotic incident at the hospital on August 17.

In a writ filed with Ghana’s High Court on August 20, and reviewed by Citi News, the plaintiff, Rejoice Tsotso Bortei, claims she sustained injuries during an altercation involving Williams and relatives of a patient. Bortei alleges Williams physically attacked her, resulting in a dislocated shoulder and injuries to her hand, impairing her ability to work as a nurse.

The suit seeks GHS5 million in damages for battery and an additional GHS2 million for defamation. According to the statement of claim, Williams publicly dismissed Bortei’s injuries, accusing her of fabricating the incident to deflect attention from hospital-related issues.

“Liar, wo se wo nsam abu. Duabɔ bebam,” Williams is alleged to have said in a social media post, translated roughly as: “Liar, you claim your hand is injured. This is a fabrication to cover up the nonsense going on at the hospital.”

Bortei’s legal counsel, Charles Delali Blagogee of Blagogee, Blacksword & Co., argues that the remarks have damaged the nurse’s reputation and exposed her to public ridicule and professional discredit.

The lawsuit demands a formal public apology and retraction of the defamatory statements, to be issued with the same visibility as the original remarks. It also seeks a permanent injunction to bar Williams from making further defamatory comments, a 50-meter restraining order, and coverage of legal fees.

Williams has eight days from the date of service to enter an appearance or risk a default judgment.

The case surfaces amid heightened scrutiny over violence against healthcare workers in Ghana. In response to the August 17 incident, Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has directed a committee investigating assaults at Ridge Hospital to deliver its findings within one week.
