A committee established by the Ministry of Health to investigate the recent assault on medical staff at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital is expected to submit its final report on Monday, 25 August.
The disclosure was made by the Ministry’s Head of Communications, Tony Goodman, during an appearance on The Big Issue programme on Saturday.
Mr Goodman said the committee, which was formed by the Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, had completed its work and would hand over its findings as scheduled.
“By yesterday, we were ready with the report. By Monday, the team will submit the report to the minister. The committee looked into the system issues, the cause of the delay, and what exactly happened at the hospital,” he said.
The probe was launched after a viral video surfaced last week, showing a violent confrontation between relatives of a patient and hospital staff in the emergency ward of Ridge Hospital. The footage sparked public outrage and renewed concerns about the safety of healthcare workers.
The Health Minister had given the committee one week to complete its investigation, citing the need for swift accountability and recommendations to improve conditions in emergency units.
In a related development, Rejoice Tsotso Bortei, a nurse who was assaulted during the incident, has filed a civil suit seeking GHS 7 million in damages. The lawsuit names “Ralph De Fellow Ghanaian” as the respondent, alleging both physical assault and defamation.
The Ministry of Health is expected to take further action based on the committee’s findings once the report is submitted.
