Two individuals believed to be military officers, along with two civilian accomplices, were arrested over the weekend following a failed attempt to rob a Chinese-operated gold mining site in the country’s resource-rich Western Region.
According to company officials, the four suspects—two of whom were clad in military fatigues—allegedly stormed the premises of LongShine Mining Company Limited in Prestea-Obouhu on Sunday, September 28, using a pickup truck to gain entry.
Zion Rootman, a spokesperson for LongShine Mining, told Channel One News that the suspects' presence triggered a swift alert to local authorities. Officers from the Prestea Police Department responded promptly, apprehending the group during the attempted heist. The suspects have since been transferred to the Tarkwa Regional Police Command for further investigation.
The incident underscores growing concerns about illegal activity targeting mining operations in Ghana, Africa’s top gold producer, where tensions between foreign-owned firms and local actors remain high.
Neither the Ghana Armed Forces nor the Tarkwa Regional Police have released an official statement as of press time.
