Police rescue 20 trafficked Ghanaians in Akwa Ibom

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has rescued 20 Ghanaians—10 men and 10 women—who were trafficked to Uyo in Nigeria’s Abia State.

In a statement issued in Uyo on Wednesday, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, said the rescue operation followed a formal request for assistance from the Ghana Police Service and INTERPOL.

According to the statement, operatives stormed a fenced compound in Obio Etoi village, Uyo Local Government Area, around 4:17 pm on Monday, August 18, 2025. The raid led to the successful rescue of all 20 victims, who have been confirmed as Ghanaian nationals.

DSP John noted that the victims appeared disoriented and unable to speak coherently after the rescue, raising suspicions that they may have been hypnotised by their traffickers.

“Investigation is ongoing, and further developments will be communicated to the public as they become available,” she added.
