One Arrested in Ridge Hospital Assault, Ghana’s Health Ministry Confirms

Ministry of Health said Wednesday that one person has been arrested in connection with the recent assault on medical personnel at Accra’s Ridge Hospital, while a second suspect remains at large.

Tony Goodman, the Ministry’s Public Relations Officer, disclosed the development during an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show, adding that Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh had taken immediate steps to respond to the incident.

“The Minister went to Ridge when the incident happened,” said Mr. Goodman. “He issued clear directives, engaged with the Greater Accra Regional Command, and ensured that the victims received medical attention and filed official reports with police.”

Mr. Goodman said hospital officials later identified one of the individuals involved in the assault. When law enforcement arrived on the scene, the suspect attempted to flee. One of the alleged accomplices was apprehended.

“We cannot say that the minister personally knows the individual. He was informed by hospital management that the gentleman who appeared at the facility was the perpetrator,” Mr. Goodman said.

The Health Ministry has pledged full cooperation with law enforcement and emphasized that due process will be followed. “Let’s allow the police to conduct their investigation. I don’t want to mention names, but whoever was involved should be held accountable,” Mr. Goodman added.

Minister Akandoh has also moved to assure the public that Ridge Hospital’s operations remain unaffected. “The system is running,” he said. “I have received briefings from hospital leadership, and everything is proceeding as planned.”

The incident has sparked concern over the safety of healthcare workers in the country. The Ministry says it is considering additional security measures for medical facilities.
