Nutrifoods Recalls Tasty Tom Tomato Mix in Ghana Over Safety Concerns

Nutrifoods Ghana Ltd., a unit of global agribusiness giant Olam International, has initiated a nationwide recall of its Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix following reports of bloated packaging, raising concerns over potential product safety.

The recall, announced August 1, affects all batches of the tomato mix sold in 210g and 400g cans, as well as 380g and 1.05kg pouches. The move comes at the direction of Ghana’s Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), which is working in coordination with the country’s National Security agency to investigate the issue.

“Our attention has been drawn by the FDA and National Security to some incidents of bloating,” Nutrifoods said in a statement. “We have therefore been directed by the regulator to issue this recall, whilst we investigate the root cause of the problem.”

The company has urged consumers to return affected products to its Tema office or to any of its official distributors across Ghana. Contact information and return instructions were included in the statement, as the company moves to retrieve the contaminated batches and replace them where needed.

Nutrifoods said the FDA has begun inspections at its production facility to ensure regulatory compliance, and that internal investigations are underway.

“We deeply regret any inconvenience caused to our consumers and trade partners,” the company said, adding that it remains committed to maintaining stringent food safety standards. “We want to reassure our consumers that we are doing our best to recover all affected products and replace them without difficulty.”

The company has not disclosed how many units are affected or whether the issue has led to any health complaints, but said it is cooperating fully with regulators.
