The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has endorsed Solomon Kwame Asumadu, a local mining executive and party official, as its candidate for an anticipated parliamentary by-election in Akwatia, a key constituency in the Eastern Region.
Mr. Asumadu, CEO of Owuo Mining Company and currently serving as the party’s constituency treasurer, was selected by consensus following internal consultations among local party leadership. The decision comes in the wake of the death of sitting Member of Parliament Ernest Yaw Kumi.
Though the Electoral Commission has not yet announced a date or the procedural framework for the by-election, NPP Akwatia Constituency Chairman Nana Yaw Addo told Citi News that Asumadu, popularly known as “Owuo,” enjoys strong backing from both executives and grassroots members.
“The party base has spoken clearly. He has the support of the majority of our executives and the broader membership,” Mr. Addo said, adding that an official announcement will be made shortly.
Speculation over the party’s candidate had intensified in recent weeks after images of the late MP’s widow, Mrs. Mavis Kumi, circulated online, fueling rumors that she would step in to contest the seat. The NPP’s Eastern Regional Chairman, Jeff Konadu, dismissed the reports as “false and misleading,” in a statement aimed at quelling public confusion.
Meanwhile, some party faithful have called for the return of former Akwatia MP Mercy Adu Gyamfi, also known as Ama Sey. Supporters argue that her leadership could help mend internal divisions and reclaim the seat for the NPP.
The Akwatia constituency remains strategically important for both the NPP and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), and the upcoming by-election is expected to draw national attention once formally scheduled.
