The New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Tuesday opened nominations for its 2026 presidential primaries, launching a critical phase in its succession process ahead of the next national election.
The nomination period will close on August 28, 2025. Candidates seeking to enter the race must submit their applications along with a non-refundable fee of 100,000 Ghanaian cedis (approximately $8,000).
NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong announced the decision at a press briefing in Accra, adding that the party’s presidential primary is scheduled to take place on January 31, 2026.
In a separate development, the party issued a sharp rebuke to the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), accusing it of attempting to politicize ongoing chieftaincy-related tensions in the northern town of Bawku. Frimpong dismissed suggestions that the NPP was linked to the recent violence in the area, calling such claims “irresponsible” and “deeply regrettable,”.
