The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has formally endorsed Solomon Kwame Asumadu, the party’s constituency treasurer in Akwatia, as its parliamentary candidate for the upcoming by-election, opting for consensus over a competitive primary process.
The decision follows weeks of consultations led by a committee appointed by the NPP’s National Council. According to Eastern Regional Chairman Jeff Konadu Addo, the committee engaged local stakeholders, including polling station executives, electoral area coordinators, traditional authorities, and community leaders, to gauge support and determine whether a primary was necessary.
“The overwhelming view was that we should not conduct primaries in Akwatia,” Mr. Addo told reporters at Parliament on July 28. “We followed that advice.”
The party reviewed a shortlist of prospective candidates — including former parliamentary aspirants and local figures such as Hon. Amase, Lawyer Wiredu, Daniel Nyame, and Osei Appiah — before settling on Mr. Asumadu. Stakeholder feedback from across towns and villages in the constituency pointed to him as the preferred choice.
“We threw out all the names in circulation for community feedback,” Mr. Addo said. “The report that came back made it clear that Solomon Asumadu was the consensus candidate.”
Following internal validation, the party sought and received approval from the National Council to proceed with a popular acclamation. “Today marks the official announcement of Kwame Asumadu as our candidate for the Akwatia constituency by-election,” Mr. Addo said.
The by-election was triggered by the recent passing of the sitting Member of Parliament. Mr. Asumadu is expected to face a competitive race, with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) yet to finalize its nominee.
