NPP 1st Vice Chairman risks suspension over alleged false claims about Akufo-Addo

The position of Danquah Smith Buttey, the National First Vice Chairperson of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), is reportedly under threat ahead of the party’s upcoming National Delegates Conference, following a formal petition demanding his suspension.

A group within the NPP has submitted a petition to the National Council, calling for disciplinary action against Chairman Buttey. He is accused of fabricating claims that former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo contacted him to suggest the postponement of the party’s conference scheduled for Saturday, July 19, 2025.

Currently acting as National Chairman in the absence of Stephen Ntim, Chairman Buttey allegedly convened an emergency Council meeting on Thursday, July 10. At the meeting, he reportedly told members that Nana Akufo-Addo, during a phone call, expressed concerns about the timing of the conference and preferred that the decision be reversed.

However, new information suggests that Chairman Buttey’s claims were false. This development has led to mounting pressure within the party, with the petition demanding his removal from office.

In an official statement released by the former President’s office on Monday, Nana Akufo-Addo firmly denied ever requesting a reversal of the party’s decision during the National Executive Committee meeting held on June 17.

Reports also indicate that the 2nd National Vice Chairperson, Alhaji Masawudu, is aware of the petition and is expected to engage party leadership to determine the next course of action.
