No Mistreatment During Special Prosecutor Detention - Adom-Otchere

Paul Adom-Otchere, the former board chairman of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), said he was not mistreated during his recent detention by Ghana’s Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), following an investigation into a disputed revenue assurance contract.

Adom-Otchere, who was briefly held after being invited by the OSP, was released on August 1 after revised bail conditions were approved. His initial detention reportedly stemmed from an inability to meet earlier bail terms, which required landed property in Ghana—an asset he said he lacked.

In an August 4 interview on The Point of View program on Channel One TV, Adom-Otchere described the conditions of his detention as basic but humane.

“It’s a normal place where every Ghanaian is detained. You’re held with others—no one was mistreated,” he said. “They provide you with a mattress, a blanket, and even clothing if needed.”

Adom-Otchere said he shared a room with several other detainees, with facilities accommodating about 25 people in total, though not all in one room. He confirmed that access to the outside world was restricted during his stay: “You can’t contact anyone.”

The OSP is currently investigating allegations that GACL awarded a revenue assurance contract without adhering to required procurement procedures. Adom-Otchere has not been charged, and the inquiry remains ongoing.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor, an independent anti-corruption body, has in recent months intensified its scrutiny of public contracts and officials, as part of a broader effort to address procurement-related misconduct in Ghana’s public sector.
