NHIA pays additional GH¢267m to hospitals

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has announced that it has disbursed an additional GH¢267.67 million to health facilities across Ghana to cover outstanding claims up to April 2025.
This brings the total amount released by the authority over the past seven months to more than GH¢1.5 billion.
According to a statement signed by the NHIA Chief Executive, Dr. Victor Asare-Bampoe, the payment is part of efforts to ensure the continued sustainability of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and provide financial support to healthcare providers.
Of the total amount paid, public health facilities received GH¢120.7 million, accounting for 45% of the disbursement. Private facilities received GH¢100.2 million, or 37%, while mission health facilities were allocated GH¢46.7 million, representing 17% of the total.
The NHIA’s prompt payment regime, introduced earlier this year, aims to keep healthcare providers adequately resourced and maintain a debt-free status for 2025. The scheme has also committed to timely reimbursements, which are critical for the continued delivery of health services nationwide.
Dr. Asare-Bampoe emphasised that payments are in line with the NHIA’s core mandate to cover healthcare services for conditions listed in the NHIS Benefit Package, which covers over 95% of disease conditions and includes more than 550 medicines on the NHIS list.
The NHIA reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening Ghana’s healthcare financing system and ensuring citizens’ access to essential medical care under the NHIS.
