New Aflao Market to Boost Local Economy – Mahama

President, John Dramani Mahama, has announced plans for the construction of a modern market in Aflao, supported by a grant from the Chinese government.

Speaking at a sod-cutting ceremony for Phase Two of the Blekusu Sea Defence project in the Ketu South Municipality, President Mahama said the new market is part of wider efforts to revitalise the local economy and improve infrastructure in border communities affected by environmental challenges, including tidal waves.

“The people of Aflao deserve a safe and modern trading environment,” Mr Mahama said. “Thanks to the generous support of the Chinese government, construction of the new Aflao market will begin soon to address the infrastructural needs of this critical border town.”

He described the grant as a sign of strong cooperation between Ghana and China and highlighted the market as a vital step in restoring livelihoods in the Volta Region.

The new facility is expected to enhance trading activities in Aflao, one of Ghana’s busiest border towns, and provide improved conditions for traders and residents alike.

President Mahama also emphasised the importance of community support in ensuring the success of the project, urging residents to take ownership of the new market and maintain it once completed.

The initiative complements ongoing developments in the region, including the Blekusu Sea Defence project, which aims to protect coastal communities and strengthen the area’s resilience against climate-related threats.
