The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) announced Friday, July 25 that it will open nominations for parliamentary primaries in the Akwatia Constituency on July 28, with a 50% reduction in filing fees for female aspirants and persons living with disabilities.
The decision, part of the party’s stated commitment to broadening participation and advancing gender equity, was outlined in a statement signed by NDC General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey.
Nomination forms will be available at the party’s Eastern Regional Office and must be returned to the same location upon completion. In a shift aimed at tightening financial procedures, the NDC directed that filing fees must be paid directly into the party’s official account at UMB Bank’s Adabraka Branch. Cheques and bankers’ drafts will not be accepted, the statement emphasized.
Aspirants will be granted access to the constituency delegates’ list only after payment confirmation, underscoring the party’s effort to streamline the nomination process and enforce compliance.
“The party expects all aspirants to operate in the spirit of decency and fairness, upholding the democratic values of the NDC,” the statement read.
The Akwatia primary is expected to draw significant attention as the party continues preparations for the 2025 general elections. The constituency, located in Ghana’s Eastern Region, has historically been a contested seat between the NDC and the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The filing fee concession, party officials say, reflects a broader strategy to lower financial barriers to entry and boost representation among underrepresented groups within the party’s ranks.
