The Ministry of the Interior has declared Monday, 22 September a public holiday to mark Founder's Day, which falls on Sunday this year.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Ministry said the change follows the coincidence of the holiday with the weekend. As a result, President John Mahama has authorised the observance of the holiday on the following Monday, using executive powers under the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act (Act 601), as amended.
Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, who signed the statement, urged the public to observe the day across the country.
Founder's Day is held annually to honour Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, and the country’s struggle for independence.
