President John Dramani Mahama has announced the official rollout of the government’s flagship ‘Big Push’ programme, a major infrastructure drive expected to transform Ghana’s economy.
Speaking at his first media engagement on Wednesday, September 10, the President disclosed that ground-breaking ceremonies will take place at three sites next week to mark the start of the initiative. The first phase, he said, will focus heavily on road development, given the sector’s significant deterioration in recent years.
“Next week, I’ll cut the sword in three locations to signal the start of the Big Push programme. The first phase, understandably, covers mainly the road sector. Everyone will admit that over the last eight years, our road infrastructure has deteriorated remarkably,” President Mahama said.
He revealed that nearly GH¢14 billion from oil and gold revenues has been allocated in 2025 to finance the programme, with almost GH¢1 billion already released for priority projects.
Among the key projects transferred under the initiative are the long-delayed Ofankor and Sawambu roads, both of which have suffered from chronic underfunding. The President assured that these roads will be completed by the end of the second quarter of 2025.
According to him, the Big Push is designed not only to improve transport infrastructure but also to stimulate trade, create jobs, and boost overall economic growth.
“The Big Push programme is aimed at transforming our infrastructure base, beginning with the road sector, to enhance economic activity and improve the lives of Ghanaians,” he emphasised.
