Mahama Swears In First Batch of Envoys

President John Dramani Mahama on Thursday swore in 18 new envoys, marking the first wave of diplomatic appointments under his renewed foreign policy agenda aimed at strengthening the West African nation’s presence in global affairs.

At a ceremony held at Jubilee House, the presidential palace in Accra, Mr. Mahama emphasized the strategic importance of the appointments, which span key world capitals across North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. The move is seen as part of a broader effort to revitalize bilateral and multilateral relationships and attract foreign investment.

Among those appointed are seasoned politicians, academics, and career diplomats, including:

Mrs. Sabah Zita Benson, named High Commissioner to the United Kingdom in London

Mr. Victor Emmanuel Smith, appointed Ambassador to the United States in Washington, D.C.

Ms. Mavis Ama Frimpong, designated Ambassador to France, stationed in Paris

Mr. Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, posted as High Commissioner to Nigeria in Abuja

Dr. Koma-Steem Jehu Appiah, Ghana’s new Ambassador to Russia in Moscow

Other notable appointees include Mr. Kojo Bonsu to Beijing, Professor Ohene Adjei to Berlin, and Alhaji Abdul Nasiru-Deen to Ankara. Ghana also named Professor Kwasi Obiri-Danso as High Commissioner to India, a signal of Accra’s intent to deepen engagement with the Global South.

The appointments extend to the multilateral arena, with Ambassador Samuel Yao Kumah assigned to Ghana’s mission in New York—home to the United Nations headquarters.

In addition to traditional ambassadorial posts, the president named two Ambassadors-in-Situ: Mr. Aikins Abrokwa, Director of State Protocol, and Mr. Gustav Kwaku Sefe Dovlo, Chief of Protocol. Mrs. Patience Kokui Gameli-Kwame was also sworn in as Ambassador-at-Large, serving as Deputy Director General of the Research Department.

The appointments come at a time when Ghana is seeking to diversify its diplomatic alliances and reposition itself as a gateway for international business in West Africa.

The envoys are expected to assume their postings in the coming weeks.
