President John Dramani Mahama has relaunched the National Sanitation Day (NSD), urging Ghanaians to work together to ensure a cleaner, healthier nation.
The reintroduction ceremony took place on Saturday, September 6, at the Institute of Local Government Studies in Madina. Under the renewed initiative, dubbed the “Clean Up Ghana” agenda, the exercise will be observed nationwide on the first Saturday of every month.
“The National Sanitation Day is a call to action; an opportunity for each of us—regardless of political affiliation, social standing, ethnicity, or religious beliefs—to unite in keeping our surroundings clean,” President Mahama said.
Outlining the goals of the initiative, he highlighted the need to:
• Promote a culture of regular cleaning across communities,
• Reduce disease outbreaks through better hygiene,
• Improve the aesthetic appeal of towns and cities, and
• Boost tourism by creating a more attractive environment.
He emphasized that the success of the program will depend on strong collaboration among government agencies, traditional authorities, religious groups, businesses, schools, and the general public.
“We are not just cleaning our environment; we are safeguarding the health of our people, protecting our environment, and leaving a legacy for future generations,” he added.
